Neil A. Burrell was born and raised in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area. He attended Lamar University and graduated from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating, he completed a two year residency in podiatric medicine and surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Burrell was appointed chief resident for the second year. Dr. Burrell’s training was in surgical and medical management of the diabetic foot as well as general foot surgery. He returned to Beaumont in 1989 to practice podiatry with sub specialization in diabetic foot care. Dr. Burrell has had Type 1 diabetes since 1969.

Dr. Burrell is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is board-certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. He holds a professional membership in the American Diabetes Association and is active at the local, state, and national levels of the ADA. Dr. Burrell is a certified diabetes educator and is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. He is an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Department of Orthopaedics and the Department of Family Practice at UTMB in Galveston.

Dr. Burrell is a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators in Chicago, IL. He also sits on the Diabetes Advisory Committee of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Burrell was awarded the 1994 Jefferson Award by the Institute for Public Service in Washington, DC, for his volunteer work in diabetes. He was also a recipient of a Senate Proclamation issued by the Texas State Senate for his volunteer work in Southeast Texas. He had the distinct honor of carrying the Olympic Torch through Beaumont on May 22, 1996.

Dr. Burrell actively lectures to the public as well as physicians and medical groups on diabetic foot problems as well as other foot conditions. Read less
