Muscle and joint pain is a new chapter in my life, but I took this very seriously, and I made some research, and some testing, before drawing my conclusions about topical analgesics.
Biofreeze Gel
This product is famous, and initially it was not intended for home use. Previously, you couldn't get this anywhere but in a massage office, or chiropractor. Now you can buy it on Amazon, and this is great. When I told my massage therapist that I used Biofreeze on my shoulder she was impressed about it, and actually she put on herself some of this magic stuff on it.
If you don't know what to expect from Biofreeze, here is a little info: it works similarly to an ice pack, by stimulating certain receptors. When you put it on you feel like a burning/cold sensation, and it numbs your pain for a while. So its action is temporary by taking away the pain, and reducing the inflammation.

The Best Topical Analgesic
To be honest, the battle is between the two major competitors on the market Biofreeze and Max-freeze. OK let's not forget the old Bengay and Perform, but Perform is actually produced by the same manufacturers as Biofreze. In 2006, Hygenic Corporation acquired Performance Health, the company who developed Biofreeze and continued the great work.
Max-Freeze Pro and Zim's Max-Freeze are manufactured by Perfecta Products, a company based in North Lima, OH.
The two products look very similar and the ingredients base is almost the same. Both of the products list as the active ingredient the Menthol and the Camphor. The menthol is the cooling agent, the one that is responsible of soothing the pain. The camphor, is also a cooling agent, which numbs the pain locally.
The old Biofreeze, (which was the best topical pain reliever), didn't contain the Aloe Vera extract, and the Arnica extract, and Max-Freeze did contain those ingredients at the time of its apparition. The new Biofreeze contains these two ingredients too. The Aloe Vera is only to give an extra protection to the skin, the menthol and camphor can irritate a bit the skin. The Arnica extract, although there is no scientific evidence, it is said to heal muscles and joints.
The Ilex extract, which is an extract of Yerba mate, the famous South American tea, it is listed as non-active ingredient, serving as a potentiator for the other ingredients, and even though the science does not have enough evidence to support this claim, the plant is used by the South American aboriginals as a potentiator in their herbal medicines.
Which one works best? Which one to buy? Well, the products have the same ingredients and they should work the same. Yes they do, however Biofreeze is the product with the best reputation and the better sales. Should this matter for you? For me it doesn't matter, but to be honest I bought the Biofreeze anyway. I had a shoulder pain after a muscle sprain, that lasted forever. When I started on Biofreeze the healing sped up a lot.
I have a friend who told me Biofreeze worked better for her. I believe this could be a little subjective, but in the end it your choice... MaxFreeze is a little less expensive than Biofreeze.

As the other two contestants on the category, Cryoderm contains two ingredient classes, a fast pain reliever, in this case is the menthol, a peppermint extract, and the healing agents that act in time. The concept is the same as with Biofreeze and MaxFreeze. Many people prefer the roll on format of the CryoDerm, because is very convenient to apply, and easy to carry around.
As the other two products it is used to manage muscle and joint pain, it is excellent for arthritis sufferers, athletes can also benefit from its use, long-lasted relief for muscle sprains, spasms, and back pain.
Massage therapists can also use it to aid in effective pain management of their clients.

Max freeze worked so much better for my daughter she is a gymnast and always had sore muscles she strained the muscles in he back we tried everything nothing helped and then I bought max freeze and she loved it we use it faithfully now .

Max freeze seems to work better, but it could be my imagination. However, MaxFreeze is clear & bio freeze stains your skin. Why they would put blue & yellow colorant? Stupid - it's pointless. Not to mention the fact that it can irritate the skin for some people.

Had some biofreeze that the wife had. Used it up, I really liked the way it worked. I went in search of it locally when I ran out. I had no luck finding it. I ran across maxfreeze and it works about the same for me.

I prefer Max-Freeze over Biofreeze because in the past I've purchased some apparently old or bad batches of Biofreeze that didn't cool my skin at all.

Biofreeze has a new product out called Perform. It's available at Walmart and most grug stores. Biofreeze releives my bac, neck and sciattic pain very well. It is also great on arthritis.

I find that when I use Bio-Freeze that I put it on then I wait 5 minutes and put it on again and it goes even deeper and relieves so much better..

I have been through a number of pain relieving creams and gels. I am now stuck on BioFreeze. It helps a lot and I like the spray bottle.

I was introduced to BioFreeze in 2002 while going to a pain clinic for a neck & back injury. It was part of the massage therapy. Since then I have used it religiously! I have recommended it to many family members as well as friends who weren't happy with the products they had tried. ALL if them LOVE it & now they recommend it to others. No way would I try anything else because this WORKS & if it ain't broke don't fix it! I was diagnosed with RA in 2005 & BioFreeze is awesome for relieving joint pain as well!
